Simon Thomas, Site Manager received a GOLD Considerate Constructor award for our Coed y Gores site in Cardiff. It is very rare for a housing scheme to receive a GOLD in these awards, so this was a great achievement for Simon and Leadbitter overall. This project comprised of 26 apartments, houses and bungalows for Cardiff Community Housing Association.
The award recognised Simon's dedication and contribution to all aspects of this project, including his awareness of site neighbours and the wider community.
Simon and his team were praised for the exceptional measures taken to include the residents and the school throughout the course of this project. Examples of some of the actions taken included providing a site cabin set up as a multi-functional information centre and manned for two hours every afternoon to deal with site and other local community enquiries and the provision of a dedicated member of the site team to escort children along the boundary as they arrived at, and left, the school.
The Considerate Constructors Scheme's costumed character, Ivor Goodsite, was called in to get the site risks message across prior to the holidays, and a painting competition, featuring construction activities, was arranged at the school with winning entries being published in local papers.
In addition the school was presented with a video camera which was used by the children, under supervision, to film site works as they progressed. It is hoped that this involvement may encourage some of the children to pursue a career in construction when they grow up. Cardiff Community Housing Association praised the strong relationship that was established between all of the stakeholders involved at Coed Y Gores.
Comments on this award included: "Dozens of compliments were received from residents, the school and education committee members. The company’s dedication was commendable and greatly enhanced the perception the public have of the construction industry."
The award was presented to Simon Thomas at Bristol Royal Marriot Hotel on 23rd March 2007.
