Work has started on a new £6 million school building for Uxbridge students.
Construction company Leadbitter has started laying the foundations of Uxbridge High School’s new three-storey teaching block on The Greenway.
To mark the occasion a special turf cutting ceremony will take place at the school on Friday April 4 at 1.30 pm. Councillor David Simmonds, Deputy Director of Education Julian Wooster, Head Teacher Peter Lang, Chair of Governors, Peter Waine and Special Works Division Director, Mike Burton will all attend along with staff and students.
The new sixth form centre, which will cater for 250 students, will include a study room and activity studio on the ground floor and 16 innovative teaching spaces on the upper floors incorporating state-of-the-art ICT facilities. The facilities will be dual use and shared with the local community.
The new complex will incorporate two special green living walls on the east and west gable ends to help it blend in with the natural environment. Other environmental features include a wind turbine and photo voltaic panels to generate power and there will be secure storage for 100 bikes.
Peter Lang, Head Teacher, said: "These are exciting times for everyone associated with Uxbridge High School. This project is the culmination of three years hard work and close partnership working with stakeholders, educationalists, architects, planners and the government."
"We are delighted that work is now underway and we look forward to benefiting from the new facility."
Mike Burton, Director of Leadbitter’s Special Works Division, added: "Leadbitter Special Project Division thrives on the provision of educational buildings and facilities. We are especially proud to be involved in the construction of the new sixth form building for Uxbridge High School."
"The innovative design incorporates a number of environmental features which will provide a benchmark for future educational projects in the vicinity."
Cllr David Simmonds, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said: "This new building will be of huge benefit to the students by giving them state of the art facilities and access to good learning resources. This is testament of Hillingdon Council’s commitment to ensuring we provide first class educational opportunities for all our young people." |
